How we scored them

The Shelf Score weighs fit for SAT preparation, contents and edition, value, and the listed grade level where one is given. Three of the six listings give a grade level, all 11 to 12. Practice test counts come from each description, and newer editions score higher on contents. How we pick explains the weights.

Book Shelf Score Fit /35 Contents /25 Value /25 Age/level /10
Official SAT Study Guide by College Board 8.3 33 24 22 0
SAT Premium Prep 2027 by Princeton Review 8.1 32 24 21 0
SAT Study Guide Premium 2027 by Barron’s 8.1 30 22 21 8
Digital SAT Practice Questions by Barron’s 8.0 27 20 21 8
SAT Math Workbook by Barron’s 7.9 24 21 21 8
SAT Prep Book 2026-2027 by Mometrix 6.9 26 20 20 0

Scores run from 0 to 10. Reading age or level counts on a list where at least one listing gives one, and a book whose listing gives none then scores zero on it. Where no listing gives one, the score is taken over the other 85 points. Books carry no warranty, so warranty is not scored.

How to choose the best SAT prep books

Official practice or strategy guide

The College Board guide gives seven official practice tests and explanations, but less coaching. Guides from Princeton Review and Barron’s add strategy chapters and content review. Many students use one of each: official tests to measure progress and a strategy guide to fix weak spots.

Check the publication date

Test prep changes from year to year. The Barron’s Premium guide is dated July 7, 2026 and the Princeton Review guide May 5, 2026, while the Barron’s practice question book is dated November 5, 2024. An older edition can still give good practice, but check the listing for a note pointing to a newer one.

Count the full-length tests

Book Full-length tests Published
College Board guide 7 April 29, 2025
Princeton Review 6 (3 online) May 5, 2026
Barron’s Premium 3 July 7, 2026
Mometrix 3 (2 printed) January 19, 2026

Timed full-length tests build stamina. Topic drills, like those in the Barron’s practice question book, are better for one weak area. See more SAT, ACT and AP prep books.

Before you buy

  • Buy new from the publisher or Amazon if you want the online tests: several descriptions warn third-party copies may not include access.
  • Check the year on the cover and the publication date on the listing.
  • Pick one full guide first, then add a drill book only if one section lags.
  • Take a free official test in Bluebook before buying, so you know where you stand.
