How we scored them

The Shelf Score weighs fit for an adult beginner, contents and edition, value, and the listed reading age or grade level. Only the children’s workbook lists either, so the other four earn no reading-age points. How we pick explains the weights.

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each book’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score. Reading age or level counts on a list where at least one listing gives one, and a book whose listing gives none then scores zero on it. Where no listing gives one, the score is taken over the other 85 points. Books carry no warranty, so warranty is not scored.

How to choose the best French workbook for adult beginners

Pick a course or a phrase book

A course with grammar and exercises suits a learner who wants structure, while a phrase book suits travel. For more beginner options, see French workbooks for beginners.

Check the date before you buy

Two listings show dates that do not match their wording, so read the edition line on the page. For more French workbooks by level, browse workbooks for learning French.

Before you buy

• Check the publication date and edition wording on each listing.
• Look for an answer key: the Complete French Workbook states one, and the Easy Learn French listing does not.
• Confirm the reader’s age: the children’s workbook lists ages 6 and up.
