How we scored them

The Shelf Score weighs fit for the reader, contents and edition, and value. The picks with stated page counts and clear series positions lead; the listings with fewer stated details rank lower.

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each book’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score. Reading age or level counts on a list where at least one listing gives one, and a book whose listing gives none then scores zero on it. Where no listing gives one, the score is taken over the other 85 points. Books carry no warranty, so warranty is not scored.

How to choose the best fantasy series to stream

Series standing first

Two picks are Book 1 of their series: A Kingsguard Tale and The Other Magic, clean entry points. The Darkness Within is Book 2 of 2, a finished duology for readers who want the whole arc now. Midnight Falls and Lunar Marked are Books 3 and 4 of the 7-book Sky Brooks series, mid-stream reads for committed fans.

Stated page counts

Three listings state page counts: 410 for A Kingsguard Tale, 513 for The Darkness Within, and 360 for Midnight Falls. The Other Magic and Lunar Marked state no page count, so length is a listing gap rather than a signal. A stated count helps you plan the read.

Match the subgenre

A Kingsguard Tale and The Other Magic are quest-driven epic fantasy, good for readers who like journeys and prophecies. The Darkness Within is romantasy with enemies-to-lovers tension. The two Sky Brooks books are werewolf pack fantasy with magic and politics.

Before you buy

• Check the edition on the listing before ordering; only three picks state a page count.
• Start with Book 1 of a series when the listing states it.
• Only A Kingsguard Tale states a reading age, so check suitability for younger readers elsewhere.
