How we scored them

The Shelf Score weighs fit for a KS1 reader, contents and edition, value, and the listed reading age or grade level. Three of the five listings state a reading age plainly: the CGP maths at 5 to 6 years and the atlas at 4 to 7 years, while both Humble Math books give a reading age marked as from customers. The DK phonics book states no reading age. How we pick explains the weights.

Book Shelf Score Fit /35 Contents /25 Value /25 Age/level /10
KS1 Maths Workouts by CGP 9.7 32 21 21 8
Picture Atlas by Brocklehurst 9.6 28 20 19 7
Double-Digit Addition by Humble 9.5 26 20 20 5
Phonics KS1 by DK 9.5 30 20 20 0
Division Timed Tests by Humble 9.4 21 19 19 3

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each book’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score. Reading age or level counts on a list where at least one listing gives one, and a book whose listing gives none then scores zero on it. Where no listing gives one, the score is taken over the other 85 points. Books carry no warranty, so warranty is not scored.

How to choose the best children’s books for ks1

Match the reading age to the child, not the shelf label

The listed reading age is the quickest filter here. The CGP maths book states 5 to 6 years and the atlas states 4 to 7 years, both squarely KS1, while the two Humble Math books state 6 to 8 and 8 to 9 years marked as from customers, the second clearly above KS1. The DK phonics book states no reading age at all, so judge it by its KS1 curriculum support instead. For readers who have outgrown KS1, our middle grade lists pick up where these leave off.

Workbooks versus reading books

Three of these are practice workbooks and two are for reading. The CGP, DK and Humble Math books all include answers, the CGP in a cut-out section and both Humble Math books in the back, which matters if an adult will mark the work. The atlas is a browsing book with maps and a quiz, closer to the picture books end of the shelf than to drills.

Check the edition and the date

For study books, the publication date tells you how fresh the curriculum fit is. The atlas is from May 2024, the most recent here, while the DK phonics book dates to January 2014. An older workbook is not automatically wrong, but compare its topics against what the child is learning now before you buy.

Before you buy

  • Check the listed reading age: only the CGP and the atlas state one plainly; both Humble Math books mark theirs as from customers.
  • The Humble Math division book lists reading age 8 to 9, above KS1, and a grade level of Preschool that contradicts its Grades 3-5 title.
  • Answers are included with the CGP book in a cut-out section and with both Humble Math books in the back; the DK phonics listing does not state an answer key.
