How we scored them

The Shelf Score weighs fit, contents and edition, value, and the listed reading age or level, which two picks state. How we pick explains the weights.

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each book’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score. Reading age or level counts on a list where at least one listing gives one, and a book whose listing gives none then scores zero on it. Where no listing gives one, the score is taken over the other 85 points. Books carry no warranty, so warranty is not scored.

How to choose the best bath book for kids ages 1-3

Match the format to the tub

Plastic pages float, and the PI Kids books use that format. Tight-woven pages wash clean, while the Mudpuppy book adds color-changing pages. A buyer who wants a toy can look at bath books with toys.

Check the listed age before the characters

Only two picks state a reading age and a grade level, so characters alone do not confirm the fit. The Pixton book lists Baby – 1 year, while the Mudpuppy book lists Baby – 2 years, both with Preschool and up. Browse waterproof books for bath time for more formats.

Before you buy

• Check the format: plastic pages float, while tight-woven material is washable.
• Compare the listed reading age with the child ages 1-3.
• For a series title, confirm the series number on the listing.
