How we scored them

The Shelf Score weighs fit, contents and edition, value, and the listed reading age or level where given. Only one pick lists a reading age. How we pick explains the weights.

Scores run from 9.2 to 9.8: each book’s point total is placed on that range, so more points always means a higher score. Reading age or level counts on a list where at least one listing gives one, and a book whose listing gives none then scores zero on it. Where no listing gives one, the score is taken over the other 85 points. Books carry no warranty, so warranty is not scored.

How to choose the best portal romantasy books

Match the series commitment

First Light is Book 1 of a complete trilogy and Fae Away of a completed 4-book series; Crowntide is Book 4 of 6 and the Phoenix books are Book 2 and 3 of 6. Start at Book 1 of each series. For more, browse the fantasy books lists.

Check the heat level

First Light lists open door, medium heat, and the Phoenix books flag mature romantic themes. Crowntide lists 14 years and up. Match the heat to your reader; the book club books list has tamer reads.

Before you buy

• Check the series position: three picks are Book 2, 3 or 4, so start at the beginning of each series.
• Check the heat level: First Light lists open door, medium, and the Phoenix books flag mature themes.
• Check the reading age: only Crowntide lists one, at 14 years and up; the rest state none.
